SEPTEMBER ’03: Part Two

September was quite a month for me! that's why it has taken two pages to fit all the photos. This page starts in Rome, some ruins, some street art, and then moves into the Amalfi Coast, a beautiful though frightening drive through twisty coastal mountain paths. We then cruise back up the west coat to Sperlonga, and back into Rome to finish up. My advice in a nutshell: wherever you go, for whatever reason, unless you specifically want to sunbathe or ski, just go out of season. Other tourists are like other people's children.
10-21Rome. You've seen it in the textbooks; I won't run through it all again. The usual suspects, colusuem, trevi fountain, and all that cliched stuff.
22-23Cat at our Hotel Puppetto, situated on a private Positano beach, but without character. I'd stay elsewhere.
24The view from our room. As I said, well situated, but once you see the rest of the town you will see just how much character it had to compete with.
25-38Positano (see?)
39My new WIFE thinks she is a badass in her sunnies
40-47Ravello, an inland Amalfi town perched way up high in the mountains
48-51I don't remember where this was. Probably Positano, definitely Amalfi Coast.
52-55Parts of our hike up the Amalfi Hills. What was meant to be a full day hike up and over a mountain into another village turned into a hot but gorgeous slog up a mountain to a cute little Agri-tourist place, perched on the mountaintop. They sold beer and cheese and gave us bread and they had a foozball table at 20 Euro-Cents per go. Several hours and euros of Foozball and beer and cheese later, we stumbled back down the mountain, well-pleased.
56A page from this other "art" project I am working on. I bought a book at Strand bookstore for 2 dollars, ripped out all the pasted-in paintings, and started assembling and disassembling this book with random bits of everything. I tried to mimic how I work on the computer, building up layers and layers, and then whittling down to something simple. Except that nothing is truly undoable.
57-64Smash Mouth, Beware of Dog, and The Like at Pompeii, a boring place with a fascinating story. They got buried in volcanic ash, which is the only reason we care about them today. Otherwise, humans would have done slowly with tractors and tarmac what Mt. Vesuvius did so long ago.
71Such a happy couple
65-71Sperlonga, a town compltetely bereft of tourists when we were there, coated in white. We got silly and booked the most expensive room available in town. It was just a three star, so made up in amenities what it lacked in character, with a big jacuzzi and bathrobes and and slippers and balconies and sea views. My favorite part was us two lying on the bed, staring up at the ceiling fans, completely wrapped in terry like some silly boxers, cooling off after a hot hot bath.
73-86Back in Rome.
