16 July, 2003. Meeting with Marijke Wilhemus of
Internet Fiji
Usability concerns
"very little usability done in this country"
Language
- simple English
- Hindi and Fijian would be ideal, but rarely ever used
- French and Italian are more likely translations, as foreigners are the target web audience with $$$
Bandwidth
- must be fast, few images
- extreme attention to alt tags
Accessibility
- they use the international standards of
http://www.w3c.org to assess accessibility, and extrapolate this into usability
Audience
- target audience is usually international
- fiji accounts for only 4% of their
traffic
Development
- use php scripts they purchase, and then adapt
- CMS
- page publishers
- search engine
- "too expensive to reinvent the wheel"
- web market saturated
- businesses for whom web is not primary business sell web services at a loss to get customers
- also some template-based businesses that severely undercut the local market
- list of Fiji web design and multimedia cos at FijiWebDesign
