Multimedia Unit: May 2003 - October 2003

a six month report of work done by the multimedia unit, for the Media Centre Advisory Committee Meeting

Training

I ran two major training modules in the last six months, a basic web research and design course for the Management department that lasted a month and a half (July to August), and a shorter but more intensive course for the Computer Science program that lasted two weeks (August). I also ran several one-off training modules with CELT: Intro To Internet, Getting Notes Online, and Chats Mailing Lists, and Message Boards.

Research

I received a grant of $FJ 36,000 from JICA to conduct research entitled Maximising the Benefits of ICT/Multimedia in the South Pacific: Cultural Pedagogy and Usability Factors. In a nutshell, this research looks at how Educational Multimedia development can be adapted to better suit the learning needs of the USP region. This has involved literature reviews, interviews with Academic staff, students, and multimedia developers, questionairres, usability-tests on students, prototype-development, and DFL centre site visits.

In the next 6 months we will analyse the information to produce an academic report, a more concise report targeting regional multimedia developers, and a model Educational Multimedia CD-rom. Once we have this information together, we will be able to produce Educational Multimedia with a much clearer idea of our target audiences needs and abilities, and will be able to raise awareness of these issues to educational multimedia developers and academics region-wide.

Fund-raising

I worked with the Language department to raise $USD 20,000 from the ROC to purchase and install a Multimedia Language Training Facility. We also received a grant of $FJ 36,000 from JICA to conduct research entitled Maximising the Benefits of ICT/Multimedia in the South Pacific: Cultural Pedagogy and Usability Factors.

Conferences and Presentations

I presented a paper entitled The Role of Division of Labor in an In-situ Multimedia-training Project: a South Pacific Case Study at the ED-MEDIA 2003 Conference in Hawaii, June 23-28, 2003. I also ran an SOH Seminar discussing themes of Pacific learning and their possible application to Educational Multimedia.

Committees

I served on three committees in the past six months:
