WORKSHOP 1: Introduction to the Internet
Wednesday, April 9, 12-1pm (1 hour)
A beginner workshop designed for the lecturer with limited internet
experience. In this workshop, we will cover:
- How the Internet works
- Basic web browsing
- The use of the Internet as a resource for courses
- Criteria for evaluating and assigning websites to students
- Proper citation of websites in academic literature
- Managing plagiarism
- Tips for organising student email as a means of communication with the lecturer
- Enabling students to submit assignments electronically

Using the Internet
- ISPs
- Browsers
- URLs, "hacking" urls- Exercise: hack a url to find out more about the site
- Email
- Email addresses
- "Hacking" email adresses- Exercise: Starting with an email address, hack the email to find a url
- Setting up rules to help organize emails
- SPAM
- Setting up a junk email address
- Not even opening an email (i.e. do not click the unsibscribe, as most of these are really used just to confirm that your email is valid, and will actually increase your spam)
