Early VR
- most of the tools designed for VR were not created for art but for research, technology
Made precursors to VR; mostly rear-projected screens with virtual objects with which the viewer could interact
- got people thinking about how the viewer could be inserted into the computer scpae

His VPL group was a pioneer in VR and remote shared VR experiences, environments that respond
Some of VPL's products include:
- the "Data Glove": a glove-based input device,
- "Eye Phone": a head-mounted color display system,
- "Audio Sphere": a 3-D real-time sound rendering system,
- "Issac": a real-time visual rendering system,
- "Body Electric": a real-time simulation OS for VR, and
- RB2 (Reality Built for 2): a complete off-the-shelf VR system.

- doom-like interface at the speed of light (15 fps! - naka Christo)

as the actual cave needed to be closed b/c the cave paintings were hurting, Britton was comissioned to create a virtual reality tour of the cave
