Work done at the USP Media Centre, 2003 October to 2004 April

Projects

Media Centre Website

I put together the new Media Centre Website, using the typo3 content management system to integrate our site into the new USP template. I uploaded the new site in December, 2003, and perform regular updates and maintenance since. You can see the new site at httphttp://www.usp.ac.fj/index.php/media_centre/

JICA Research and Development Project

This one-year project, entitled "Cultural Pedagogy and Usability of New Media in the South Pacific" was funded by Jica for $36,000, and investigates how to develop educational multimedia that is specifically designed for the USP region. The Research phase of the project involved over 200 questionnaires, usability tests with students, and interviews with staff and students at the USP centres.

I conducted interviews with every USP centre via email, telephone and/or USPNet, and visited 6 centres: Nauru, Kiribati, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, the Marshall Islands, and Fiji. In February, I completed the draft of the 30+ page academic paper outlining findings and recommendations for the development of educational multimedia in the USP Region, and assembled a team for the development of the model multimedia project, which will be completed by June of 2004. Key outputs will include academic papers for publication and presentation in journals and conferences, a model educational multimedia project demonstrating the reccomendations, and a small book explaining the findings and development techniques in language understandable to the average distance educator, multimedia developer, educational technologist.

Fiji History CD

This interactive CD Rom on Pacific History focuses on Lapita sites in Fiji, and the evolution of the Sigatoka Sand dunes, and will be used in Geology department classes and at the Sigatoka sand dunes visitor centre. I have started developing a timeline similar to the PacificTimeline but focusing on Fiji, and am using 3d landscape software to create an animation showing the history of the Sigatoka Sand dunes.
