albatross house (2007)

I want there to be a story about a man who built a birdhouse big enough for him to sleep in, and dragged it to the ocean.

And I want that story to be true.

This became the impetus for a sort of undercover collaborative performance I staged with citizens of Marquette, Nebraska. I built such a birdhouse and set out on the pioneer trail in Nebraska (now a state highway), pushing and sleeping in the birdhouse. I built it so that I could barely manage it alone, and so often required the help of passing truckers. Ostensibly, I was doing this for freedom, "you know, like birds, and pioneers," so our conversation would often turn to freedom, while on our hands and knees, struggling to free this craft from the muck in which it was mired.
